What makes a good robot mop?

A robot mop has one job a robot vacuum cleaner on its own can't do: lift the sticky, dried-on grime that suction leaves behind. Kitchen splashes, muddy paw prints and the grey film that builds up in hallways all need water and some scrubbing. The catch is that the flooring underneath is not one material. Engineered oak, laminate, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), porcelain and natural stone all react differently to water, pressure and cleaning products, so the best robot mops are the ones that let you control all three.

In practice that comes down to five things:

  • The mop system - a dragged cloth, a vibrating pad, twin rotating pads or a roller. This decides how much scrubbing you get.
  • Water control - several flow levels, or a dock that wets the pad precisely, so wood and laminate joints never sit wet.
  • Carpet handling - mop lifting, pad detaching or carpet detection so damp pads stay off carpet.
  • Edge and corner reach - extending pads or rollers that clean right up to skirting boards and kitchen plinths.
  • Pad care - a base station that washes and dries the mop pads and refills the water tank, so a smelly mop pad never gets dragged across the floor.

The four mop systems compared

Expert Reviews found a "dramatic difference" in mopping ability between the best and worst machines it tested, and most of that comes from the mop system rather than the suction figure. Here is how the four types in our range compare.

Mop systemHow it cleansBest forExamples in this range
Drag cloth + drip tankA damp microfibre cloth is pulled behind the robot as water drips through from a small tankLight daily dust and footprints in flats and small homesXiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop P (0.5 litre tank), HONITURE G20 Pro (250ml), Coredy R750 (500ml)

Drag cloths: cheap and gentle

The simplest robots pull a cloth along the floor. They are gentle, which suits delicate finishes, but the cloth only wipes once and gets dirtier as it goes. Expert Reviews also notes that drip-fed cloths can take a while to get properly damp. They are best treated as a dust-and-wipe tool between proper cleans. Our budget robot vacuum and mop range is mostly this type.

Spinning pads: the all-rounder

Twin spinning pads add real agitation, and on better models they lift several millimetres when the robot vacuum reaches carpet. Many flagship docks now push one pad outwards so the robot reaches the edge of the room and around furniture legs - Ecovacs lists 1mm mop edge proximity for the Deebot T50 Pro Omni, which at 8.1cm tall also slips under low furniture.

Roller mops: the cleanest finish

Rollers are the newest design and the biggest step up in mopping. Because the roller is rinsed with clean water while it turns, it lays down a fresh surface on every rotation instead of pushing grime around, which makes rollers the best at lifting dried stains. Dyson's Spot+Scrub Ai, Mova's roller models and the Deebot OZMO roller all work this way.

PIC: Ecovacs Deebot T80 Omni on Amazon - an OZMO roller mop spinning at 220 RPM, 18,000 Pa suction and a dock that washes the roller in 75°C water, dries it with 45°C air and re-mops areas that need a second pass.

Choosing a robot mop by floor type

Check your floor maker's care guide first: their rules on water and cleaning products should decide your settings. These are the points that matter most for each surface.

Engineered and solid wood

Wood is the floor most at risk from too much water. Havwoods' engineered wood care guide recommends a damp cloth rather than a soaking wet mop, warns that excess water can make boards swell, and advises against harsh chemicals such as bleach or ammonia. Choose a robot with several water flow levels, set it to the lowest and use only a wood-safe solution. Hot-water pad washing in the dock is fine because the pad is dried before it touches the floor again. See our robot mops for hardwood floors for models that suit oak and parquet.

Laminate

Laminate has a fibreboard core, so the danger is water seeping into the joints rather than marking the surface. Low water, frequent passes and pads that lift on carpet are what you want. Our robot mops for laminate floors page goes into more detail.

Vinyl and LVT

Luxury vinyl copes with water well, but the wrong product can dull it. Karndean's cleaning and care advice is to mop with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for vinyl and avoid household cleaners and bleach-based detergents, which can make the floor slippery or discoloured. Only put solution in the tank if the robot maker approves it. For click-together planks see robot mops for vinyl plank flooring.

Ceramic and porcelain tile

Tiles are the easiest surface for a robot mop and the one where scrubbing power pays off most, because grout lines hold dirt. Spinning pads or a roller with downward pressure clean grout far better than a dragged cloth. Our robot mops for tile floors collection covers this in depth.

Natural stone

Sealed slate, limestone and marble are tough but sensitive to acidic cleaners, which can etch the surface. Use plain water or the stone supplier's recommended pH-neutral product, and keep the water level moderate.

Proscenic Q8 Max+ robot mop with two mopping pads
PIC: Proscenic Q8 Max+ on Amazon - two mopping pads that lift on carpet, 360° LiDAR navigation, 8,000Pa suction and up to 200 minutes per charge - a sensible mid-range choice for a mix of laminate and carpet.

Features worth paying for

Mop lifting and carpet detection

If you have rugs, this is the feature that matters most. The Eureka E20 Plus lifts its mop 10mm, while flagship docks can drop the pads off entirely before the robot vacuums carpet. Cheaper robots without lifting need no-go zones set in the app around every mat.

Self-washing base station

A dock that washes and dries the pads cuts your maintenance, stops them smelling and stops dirty water being spread around. The Shark ThermaCharged PowerDetect cleans its mop in 85°C water, while the Deebot T30S washes at 70°C. Separate tanks keep the dirty water away from the clean supply - browse our robot mops with a dirty water tank and hot water robot vacuum mops if this is your priority.

Edge and corner cleaning

Round robots naturally miss corners. Extending pads and rollers fix this: the Shark ThermaCharged's pad extends up to 2.5cm, and RTINGS praises the Roborock Qrevo Curv's extendable side brush and mop for reaching edges that fixed designs leave behind. Dyson's roller also extends out to the skirting board.

Navigation and obstacle avoidance

LiDAR mapping lets you set room-by-room water levels - more on the kitchen tiles, less on the oak in the lounge. Camera-based obstacle avoidance also keeps the robot vacuum away from cables, socks and chair legs, and helps it work around furniture without bumping. See our robot vacuum and mop with mapping and obstacle avoidance robot vacuums ranges.

Threshold climbing

Rooms often meet at raised door bars. Shark suggests setting a no-go zone for any threshold over 2.5cm, and most robots manage around 2cm. If yours are taller, look at our robots that climb thresholds.

Battery life

PCMag treats 60 minutes as enough for a small home and looks for around 90 minutes in larger ones. Most robots in this range list 2-3 hours, though mopping uses more power - the Lefant M5 Pro lists up to 320 minutes vacuuming but 180 minutes when vacuuming and mopping together.

Two other machines are worth knowing about. The iRobot Roomba Combo i8+ lists a 210ml tank and mopping coverage of up to 55m², which suits a kitchen-diner and hallway, and it works with Alexa for voice control. The Roomba i3+ EVO bundle pairs a vacuum with the Braava Jet m6, a dedicated mopping robot - a good set-up if you'd rather the two jobs were done separately. You'll find Roomba combos in our Roomba vacuum and mop range.

Mova Z60 Ultra Roller robot vacuum and mop
PIC: Mova Z60 Ultra Roller on Amazon - a roller mop rinsed by 12 nozzles as it cleans, 28,000Pa suction, up to 3.5 hours of run time and listed threshold climbing of up to 8cm for homes with raised door bars.

Robot mop brands to know

  • Roborock - strong on water control and mop lifting. The Roborock Qrevo S5V offers 30 water flow levels and a 10mm mop lift, and RTINGS rates the Roborock Saros 10R and Qrevo Curv as its top robot vacuums for hardwood floors.
  • Ecovacs - Deebot Omni models with hot-water pad washing, hot-air drying and OZMO roller mops. See our Ecovacs robot mops.
  • Dreame - high suction for the money. The Dreame D20 Air Plus lists 20,000 Pa, LiDAR mapping and an electronic water tank with adjustable flow, and Dreame's Ultra flagships add self-washing docks.
  • Eufy - the Eufy Omni S1 Pro presses its spinning pads down with 1kg of pressure at 170 RPM and lifts them 1.27cm on carpet, and PCMag lists the Eufy Omni E28 among its best robot mops. Both work with Alexa and Google Assistant.
  • iRobot - Roomba combos that vacuum and mop in one run, and Braava robots that only mop. The Roomba i3+ EVO and Braava Jet m6 bundle covers both jobs with two machines.
  • Shark - sonic mopping and NeverTouch bases that wash pads in hot water. Browse our Shark robot vacuum mops.
  • Dyson - the Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai uses a roller that cleans with heated water and extends to reach the edge, and its dock dries the roller with 45°C air.
  • Mova - roller mops and the Mova Mobius 60, whose MopSwap dock switches between three mop types for different jobs.

Which type suits your home?

  • Small flat, mostly laminate or vinyl: a drag-cloth or sonic-pad robot with water levels is enough. Keep it running daily so dirt never builds up.
  • Family kitchen with tiles: spinning pads or a roller, plus a self-washing dock. Sticky spills are where cheaper mops struggle.
  • Oak or engineered wood throughout: fine water control, a pad-drying dock and app-set low water for those rooms.
  • Wood or tile with rugs: mop lifting of 10mm or more, or pads that detach in the dock.
  • Dogs and cats: a roller or spinning pads for paw prints, plus anti-tangle brushes that cope with pet hair - see our robot vacuum and mops for pet hair.
HONITURE G20 Pro budget robot vacuum and mop
PIC: HONITURE G20 PRO on Amazon - a simple drag-cloth mop with a 250ml water tank and three water flow levels, 4,500 Pa suction and around 150 minutes of running - fine for a light daily wipe of a flat or small house.

Getting the best results

  1. Vacuum before you mop. All the combo robots here do this in one run, but if yours mops only, a dry pass first stops grit and dust scratching the finish.
  2. Start with the lowest water setting and increase it only on tiles or stone.
  3. Use only approved solution. The wrong product can foam, leave residue or damage the tank. See our robot mops that use cleaning solution for models that dose it automatically.
  4. Wash or swap mop pads regularly if there is no self-washing dock, and let them dry fully.
  5. Descale in hard water areas. Limescale can build up in the water lines and nozzles over time.
  6. Set no-mop zones in the app for mats, delicate floors and the dog's bowl.
  7. Tidy up first. Lift cables, push chairs under the table and move light furniture so the robot reaches the whole room.

Independent testing helps too: Which? robot vacuum cleaner reviews cover cleaning performance, and many tested models mop as well.

Are robot mops worth it for hard floors?

For keeping a hard floor clean day to day, yes. A robot that mops every day stops dirt building into the grimy layer that needs a bucket and elbow grease. PCMag's view is that robot mops are great for maintenance and fresh spills, but deep-set stains may still need a manual scrub now and then. For most homes that is a big drop in hands-on cleaning.

Robot mop FAQs

Will a robot mop damage wooden floors?

Not if it uses low water and a wood-safe product. The risk comes from soaking pads and steam, so choose a model with adjustable flow and a dock that dries the pads. Avoid steam on wood, as Havwoods advises.

Can a robot mop replace a normal mop?

For routine cleaning, a robot vacuum cleaner with a good mop largely can. You will still want a manual mop now and then for corners, stairs and old stains.

Do robot mops scratch tiles or laminate?

Mop pads are soft microfibre, so the mop itself won't scratch. Scratches come from grit dragged across the floor, which is why vacuuming first matters.

Can I use my usual floor cleaner in a robot mop?

Usually not. Most makers only approve their own solution or plain water, as other products can foam or clog the pump. Check the manual first.

How often should a robot mop run?

Daily in kitchens and hallways and two or three times a week elsewhere is plenty. Light, frequent passes beat occasional heavy ones on wood and laminate.

Are robot mops good on dark floors?

Dark tiles and gloss finishes show streaks and leftover stains most. Roller mops and docks that rinse pads with fresh water leave the cleanest finish; if you see streaks, reduce the water and solution.
